Agonal breathing sometimes occurs after death and is especially common in cases of cardiac arrest.
Some viewers may find this video distressing but there is no blood, and the pig was anaethetised before cardiac arrest was induced.
The video clearly demonstrates how easy it is to assume that if a casualty is making noisy, infrequent gasps for air that they are breathing. However, this must not be confused with normal breathing.
These guidelines were written by the Health Protection Unit of Shropshire and Staffordshire Health Authorities. They are public domain and you may copy, and use them, as you see fit.
